NO BS! Brass Band headlines RVA Playlist 5th Anniversary Party on June 4

On Thursday, June 4 music blog RVA Playlist celebrates five years of highlighting the Richmond music scene with a big anniversary show. Local music writer Andrew Cothern brings the successful event to the Broadberry to commemorate the success of the online music site.

The milestone event features some of the best local bands in the city including Jonathan Vassar & the Badlands, Goldrush and NO BS! Brass Band. The Broadberry is RVA’s premier destination for live music, which also has local and craft beers on tap and serves a full menu all night. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Jonathan Vassar‘s craft stands upon a sturdy structure of tradition: the deep roots drawn upon by both the outlaws of country music and the songwriters of the 60s and 70s. Seamlessly shifting from pastoral impressionism to urban romanticism, Vassar masterfully weaves lyrics into both poignant narratives and visionary tableaux.

Goldrush first played together just as friends with Prabir Mehta of pop rock band Prabir and the Substitutes and Richmond Symphony musicians Matt and Treesa Gold and it became something more. Drummer Gregg Brooks enthusiastically completed the rock quartet. Matt & Treesa are classical musicians and Prabir and Gregg were raised in rock & roll. They share a love of Beethoven and the Beatles that allow the experimentation process of mixing classical instruments into popular music. The group continues to record and perform in Richmond and surrounding areas to enthusiastic crowds. The band’s first and latest album “Goldrush: Greatest Hits” is available now.

No BS! Brass Band is a powerful brass band that embraces the spirit of New Orleans into its original East Coast modern funk. Their danceable arrangements are outstandingly well thought-out and organized, drawing inspiration from funk, jazz, klezmer, calypso, and Led Zeppelin. Nearly every member has had conservatory training, holding various Bachelors and Masters degrees in music. This band has quickly earned a reputation as a premiere band to see for an evening of heart-pounding energy and uncontrollable dancing.

“All three acts are making big moves in the community,” Cothern says. “Not only are they incredibly talented, they’ve also been very supportive of the Richmond music scene and of RVA Playlist over the past five years. And they are only a small fraction of our city’s music scene has to offer.”
