Jonathan Vassar and The Speckled Bird
The Fire Next Time

Download from iTunes
The Fire Next Time presents a pastoral world full of flora, fauna, running rivers and blazing fires. Threads of birth and death sew together tragic tales of mothers and fathers; sons and daughters. Jonathan Vassar is joined on this record by his live band: The Speckled Bird. Chris Edwards (banjo, mandolin, electric guitar) Antonia FD Vassar (accordion, glockenspiel) and Joshua Quarles (cello, clarinet, bass) use delicate melody and vocal harmony to set the stage for outstanding follow up to Vassar’s first release The Hours and The Days. Vassar creates spaces that The Speckled Bird fills, with both resource and reserve, to create rich and compelling sounds of acoustic and electric clarity. The names of both the record and the band are taken from old folk spirituals. Echoing the imagery of these traditional songs, The Fire Next Time is full of metaphor, and metamorphosis.

Track List:
1. Nearer My Father's Wounded Side 2. Saint Josephina 3. San Jacinto 4. Match Made in Heaven 5. Hole in the Ground 6. You Do Too

Produced by Wil Loyal
Recorded by Allen Bergendahl of Viking Recording Company in Richmond, VA.

The Hours and the Days
Jonathan Vassar
The Hours and The Days

Download from iTunes

Jonathan Vassar's craft stands upon a sturdy structure of tradition: the deep roots drawn upon by both the outlaws of country music and the songwriters of the 60s and 70s. Seamlessly shifting from pastoral impressionism to urban romanticism, Vassar masterfully weaves lyrics into both poignant narratives and visionary tableaus.
The Hours and the Days is a rich and handsome illustration of Vassar's song-craft. His warm acoustic guitar and rugged vocal are decorated fondly in lush arrangements carefully constructed by a large variety of accompanists. The result is a fully dressed collection of unique songs—-an intricate, dynamic record.

Track List:
1. Catch Me if You Can 2. Flesh and Bone 3. About a Dog 4. Knuckle Shuffle 5. Turn Down the Sun 6. Holy Roller 7. Arm and Hammer

Produced by Wil Loyal
Recorded by Allen Bergendahl at Viking Recording Company in Richmond, VA.

mermaid skeletons - darlings e.p.
Mermaid Skeletons
Darlings EP

Download from iTunes

Mermaid Sketelons is shepparded by the sugary voice and whimsical song writing of Joshua Hryciak. His vocal range is almost encyclopedic, and is married perfectly with the masterful, diverse harmonies that are extensively used on Darlings. Influenced heavily by the Silly Symphonies series of animated shorts produced by Walt Disney Productions from 1929 to 1939, and Rogers and Hammerstein, who are best known for creating a string of immensely popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, Mermaid Skeltons have created an inspired tea room orchestra, and have been writing what they refer to as their attempt at beautiful song. Darlings is the perfect introduction to the orchestra's romantic, innovative, and harmonic sound. Their diverse instrumentation includes dense layers of delicate guitars, piano, ganjo, mouth harp, glockenspiel, organ, bass, trumpet, accordion, and percussion.

Recorded by Allen Bergendahl at Viking Recording Company in Richmond, VA.

Mermaid Skeletons is Joshua Hryciak (Vocals, Guitar, Piano), Michael Satterfield (Guitar, Ganjo, Percussion, Vocals), Benjamin Nelson (Guitar, Mouth Harp, Glockenspiel, Vocals), Anne Spraker (Organ, Glockenspiel, Vocals), Grant Hunnicut (Bass, Ganjo, Vocals), Richard Bollinger (Guitar, Trumpet, Vocals), Mat Shelton (Percussion, Guitar, Accordion,Vocals) and Sarah Dyson (Vocals).

david shultz and the skyline - sinners gold
David Shultz and the Skyline
Sinner's Gold

Download from iTunes

David Shultz and The Skyline steadily craft songs of both undeniable immediacy, and curious timelessness. Rather than writing a steady flow of songs - night and day, good and bad - the Richmond Va songwriter and his band are content to move at their own pace. Nearly two years after Shultz's self-titled bare-boned debut, David Shultz and The Skyline have completed the careful construction of the 11 new songs that have become Sinner's Gold. This is an album of songs stemming from a vast array of emotional and philosophical outlets and dead ends. There are songs with such a clear sense of pop craftsmanship that they could find their way to popular radio. Conversely, there are songs so intimate that you may want to claim them for yourself, co-conspiring with the music and lyrics in a private world.

David Shultz and The Skyline is David Shultz (acoustic guitar, harmonica, vocals) Curtis Patton (lap steel, electric guitar) Marcus Shrock (bass, backing vocals) Matt Morton (drums, backing vocals) Kenny Shultz (Keyboards).

Track List:
1. Free 2. Can't Can't 3. Natural 4. Wooden Floors 5. Albino Crow 6. Already There 7. The Key 8. Doctor Mother Mirror 9. Branches 10. Two Hearts 11. Apples

Recorded by Kenny Shultz at Imagine Studios in Richmond, VA.

homemade knives - no one doubts the darkness
Homemade Knives
No One Doubts the Darkness

Download from iTunes

No One Doubts the Darkness, gracefully layers acoustic guitars, bass, cello, piano, banjo, percussion, mandolin, xylophone, and organ. Their instruments glide seamlessly through each track while the steadfast vocals provide a map to the often sparse and wandering melodies, giving the music both a purpose and a home. This recording is dark, moody, dramatic, and devastatingly handsome.

Homemade Knives is Wil Loyal (vocals, piano, organ), Shane Jenkins (guitars, xylophone), Chris Carroll (cello), and Ryan McLennan (bass), with Michael Satterfield (percussion), Tim Carroll (banjo), Josh Small (mandolin, banjo, vocals), Anousheh Khalili (vocals),David Shultz (vocals), and Adrienne Brown (vocals).

Catchy, up-beat and timeless songs. Searchingly intimate and seemingly effortless, David's voice is sensational and distinctly his own. After writing nearly forty songs in his first two years as a solo act, David has been very selective with this recording. He has left us with just ten recorded tracks. Ten downright amazing tracks. His guitar work tends toward finger-picked or percussive, and is backed by drums, bass, and piano.

Track List:
1. How It Was 2. The Flaws 3. Fisher King 4. All the Same 5. Abyss 6. The Room 7. Grey Away 8. Tones 9. Blue Jay 10. Of All the Things

Come check out Michael King's wonderful article on Jonathan Vassar and The Speckled Bird at Magazine33.com:

"...It didn't take long to discover that Jonathan Vassar and The Speckled Bird was one of Richmond's most prominent folk groups, creating music that speaks for itself: rich, colorful lyrics complimented by warm, emotive arrangements, and vocals that invite the listener into the story. I was curious to meet the man behind the music, so I met with Jonathan to find out more about him and The Speckled Bird..."
